Regardless of your opinion of McGregor/Mayweather, this writer is sure that fans of both sides of the divide will agree that there was one great positive at the end of this morning's bout: zero talk of a rematch. Mayweather assured the world he would never fight again; McGregor says he is on his way back to the UFC.
This fight was an exercise in hype, and it became wearing after a while, especially during the risible four-day press tour last month. Half the world soared to great heights of fulmination during the entire farrago, as we all lapsed into a kind of collective aneurysm.
In years and decades to come, this fundamentally absurd fight will be best summed up by this exchange between Stephen A. Smith and Teddy Atlas on ESPN, as two cogent, professional broadcasters ended up as quivering, gibbering wrecks.
