Conor McGregor admitted that he was caught a little bit off guard by last night's press conference at the Staples Center for his August 26th fight with Floyd Mayweather.
Speaking to MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani after the event, McGregor said he didn't know the fighters were expected to step up to the podium and deliver speeches.
It appears the Dubliner was expecting something similar to UFC press conferences where fighters field questions from journalists.
I didn't get told nothing. I didn't know [there were going to be] speeches. It's a completely different format [to UFC press conferences].
Before Dana went up, he was like, 'You got a speech?' I've got no fuckin' speech.
I just rolled up and started talking shite. I had fun. That's the main thing.
Initially, McGregor interjected as Floyd Mayweather stood at the podium aiming the odd insult at the MMA fighter. Those replies from McGregor became far less frequent and audible as it appeared his microphone was deliberately cut.
That his microphone was cut was confirmed by McGregor who added, 'They can do what they want but they ain't keeping me from him in the ring.'
As the two fighters stood toe-to-toe on stage, they could be seen, but not heard, throwing further words in each other's direction.
McGregor told Helwani what was said:
He was trying to say something about the gloves. I was like,'You cried about the gloves, you cried about the ounces in the gloves.' Then he tried to say something about MMA next and I was, 'You're talking shit that you won't do.'
McGregor also said that he will likely fight at UFC 219 on December 30th. His motivation for that fight: getting a little bit higher on the next Forbes Rich List.
