If there's one sport where Ireland well and truly punches above our weight, it's boxing. A cursory look at our Olympic medal haul throughout the past century will show you that we as a sporting nation excel in a ring more than anywhere else.
And we're rightly proud of that tradition. Leaving aside the Olympics, we have two current mens world champions in Andy Lee and Carl Frampton while Katie Taylor's accomplishments don't need any explaining. So when two of the UFC's most recognisable names engage in a discussion about Ireland's lack of boxing pedigree, you better believe our indignation meter is hitting dangerous levels.
Chael Sonnen and George St Pierre were discussing Conor McGregor's rise to the top when Sonnen displayed a serious lack of knowledge by claiming the following.
Ireland isn't putting out great boxers, great fighters, great wrestlers. Who's he training with in Ireland?
St Pierre then agreed with Sonnen before intimating that McGregor didn't need to be surrounded by a culture of greatness to be great himself.
