Andy Lee Versus The Most Compelling Man In Boxing Is A Real Possibility

Speaking to Boxing News on Monday, Andy Lee expressed a desire to fight Gennady Golovkin, probably the most exciting man in the boxing game right now.

Golovkin faces David Lemieux next month while Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez goes up against Miguel Cotto in November. Should he beat Billy Joe Saunders (on a date yet to be announced), Lee wants a bout against the winner of one of those fights.

I want to fight the winner of one of those fights. More than likely it will be Golovkin. If Cotto wins, I don’t see him fighting me. He’s turned it down once already, Canelo maybe but maybe not. I would like to fight Cotto, Golovkin, any of them. I think Cotto’s the favourite, I think Golovkin’s the favourite and I’d like to fight one of them.

And there's a real chance that what would be the most high profile fight for an Irish boxer in ages could actually happen. Golovkin's manager spoke positively about the possibility to the Irish Sun.

Andy is one of the few top middleweights that actually agreed to fight GGG last year, so we have to give him a lot of respect for that.

GGG is completely focussed on David Lemieux as that is a very dangerous fight.

But if he comes out of that fight successfully, a fight with Andy now as a unification fight would be much bigger than it was last year.

Golovkin is 33-0 in his career with his last 20 wins coming via stoppage. Still, Lee believes he can cause the Kazakh fighters more problems than anyone else in the middleweight division.

Fighting the best and proving that I’m the best. People might laugh when they hear me say that but again there’s nobody out there that can pose the questions to him that I can. Who can measure power? But in terms of one-punch power, I’ve had a lot more one-punch knockouts than he has. I’m taller than him and I’m a southpaw.

He’s dealt with everything that’s been put in front of him, you have to give him credit, he’s probably the pound-for-pound best. If he fought Mayweather, he’s beat Mayweather some way. You can’t fault Golovkin, you have to admit he’s the best in the division for what he’s done and what he’s shown. But I’d like to give it a go. I’d like to see. You want to fight the best, you want to see how good you are.
