Nearly 21 years after they last fought, Steve Collins and Nigel Benn have agreed to a rematch.
The BBC reports this morning that Benn expects the fight to take place later this year in October or November. The two will seek to have the fight sanctioned in Britain. However, if it is not, they will look to stage it abroad.
Benn retired in 1996 after his second fight against Collins. The 53-year-old says the third fight against the Dubliner is about closure. He had been considering a rematch against Chris Eubank but that did not come to fruition.
It's about the final chapter. It's about closure.
I was going backwards and forwards with Chris and I thought: 'I wouldn't have a problem with Steve.' So I asked him if he wants to fight. He said yes. No mucking about.
For the 52-year-old Collins, who retired a year after Benn, it's just about money.
It's just about money, a payday which will allow me to buy some more land.
I have no problem for Nigel. I have a lot of respect. I like him.
This would not be Collins' first attempt to come out of retirement. Four years ago, the former WBO super-middleweight champion announced that he would lace up his gloves once again to take on Roy Jones Jr. That was a fight which failed to happen.
Collins' son, Steve Jr., had a playful dig at his father's comeback attempt this afternoon.
When I'm 50 something and have a midlife crises, I will just buy a new motor bike. You get me.
