Niall Carew, who just recently stepped down at the manager of the Waterford senior footballers, had a gambling day for the ages yesterday as he pulled off a huge 18,512/1, four-leg bet to win €170k from Boylesports.
Carew, who also served as a Kildare selector under Kieran McGeeney, included three horse races and the All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Mayo in the win.
The first two legs were the 3.10 at Deauville in France where Ribbons won for him at 10/1, followed by Ansgar winning the 4.15 at Goodwood also at 10/1. The penultimate leg came in when Kieran O'Leary kicked an excellent equaliser for Kerry against Mayo. Niall had the draw backed at 8/1. Finally, Kalann obliged for him at 16/1 in the 5.10 at the Curragh.
He had two bets, a €5 accumulator and a €3 Lucky 15, for a total gambled of €50.
