In recent years a number of Irish athletes have retrospectively been upgraded to medal positions years after they competed at major championships. The reason: other athletes being disqualified for doping.
Derval O'Rourke last year received a bronze medal after she had initially finished fourth at the 2013 European Indoors. Earlier this year, Rob Heffernan was also upgraded up the bronze medal position after he finished fourth at the 2012 London Olympics. Seven years following the 2009 World Athletics Championships, Olive Loughnane received gold for the 20k walk.
On last night's Late Late Show, Thomas Barr - who finished fourth at the Olympics by just 0.05 of a second - spoke about the possibility of the same fate awaiting him.
The way things are going, it's not unlikely. If it happens, it happens. It would be a hollow victory because you miss out on coming over the line and seeing your name up in the third position, second position. There's part of me that wishes I finishes fifth or sixth or further down because it's less of a possibility.
To have a medal would be unbelievable.
