How unlucky can you get? NUI Galway looked to be cruising home in the 4 x 100m relay at the Irish University Championships today, only for disaster to strike on the final leg of the race.
It was Aisling Forkan that was handed the baton to complete the circuit, with her college well in the lead at the time. Just when it looked like she would romp home to victory, disaster struck as she appeared to suffer a pulled hamstring.
Despite the injury, Forkan tried to complete the final 25 metres or so on one leg, coming agonisingly close to holding out for the win.

It was Ulster Universities that would ultimately come away with the last gasp win, but you can't help but feel sorry for Forkan and her NUIG teammates. She showed great heart to keep going, and almost pulled it out of the bag.
Considering the circumstances, coming away with silver is no small feat.
