A fantastic night for Irish athletics! After Mark English produced a fantastic display to capture bronze in the 800m final this evening, all eyes turned to Ciara Mageean in the 1500m of the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
While British runner Laura Muir entered the race as the clear favourite, there were high hopes that Mageean would be able to find her way onto the podium. She would put in a strong run to do just that, and was incredibly unlucky not to come away with a silver medal.

Haven overtaken Poland's Sofia Ennaoui with around 400 metres to go, she looked well on her way to claiming second place. It was not to be, however, as she was hauled back right at the finish line, finishing in a time of 4:09.43.
Mageean will know she could have had silver, but she will no doubt be delighted to medal in this race. It is no more than what she deserves, and will act as major boost as we head into an Olympic year in 2020.
