The European Athletics Championships kicked off in Zurich on Tuesday morning and one of the most notable early incidents took place during the heats of the 3000m steeplechase. Spanish athlete Victor Garcia was trying to gain on the leaders when faced with the final hurdle, which he took at quite a bit of speed. His trailing leg caught the obstacle and sent Garcia head first into the track.
Garcia, who was expected to challenge for a medal at the Championships, seemed to lose consciousness in the immediate aftermath of the fall but soon came round and was tended to by medics on the track before being taken away on a stretcher. Understandably, he a bit worse for wear following the incident.
Ignacio Mansilla, the press liaison officer for the Spain team, said:
He was pretty badly shaken up but he’s OK now. He can’t remember anything about the incident.
