Five members of the Pussy Riot group were beaten by Cossacks patrolling Sochi while trying to perform a song called 'Putin will teach us to love the motherland' under one of the advertising signs.
Among the members attacked were Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova. Tolokonnikova tweeted afterwards 'My back hurts from whips, body bruises and whip marks on my temple - cuts and bruises. I was lying in a hospital koyke. Putin will teach us to love the homeland.'
Cossacks are not police but rather enforcers employed to keep order in the region.
