The Diamond League series of track and field meetings got underway on Friday with the first event in Doha.
One of the star performances on the night was from German javelin thrower Thomas Rohler. The Olympic gold medalist unleashed the longest javelin throw in 20 years when he hit a mark of 93.90m.
It was also the sixth longest throw of all time. All previous marks are held by Czech great and world record holder (98.48m) Jan Zelezny.
Rohler's previous best was 91.28m.
Rohler said afterwards that he had not expected such an achievement in his first event of the season.
I did not see that coming. I did not expect that in the first start of the season. I’m second best, ever. It will take some days to realise that.
It was an amazing competition for all of us. We had a good training camp this year; it was early so we did a lot of fast training on the grass.
A word must go to the cameraman who did not budge from his post despite the javelin landing just metres away.
