Rhasidat Adeleke came within one place of making the 400m final at the World Athletics Championships.

The 19-year-old finished fourth in her semi-final, running 50.81. It was a race won by two-time Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

The top two went through automatically to the final from each of the three heats, along with the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers. Adeleke was the third fastest non-automatic qualifier, finishing 0.16 behind Anna Kiełbasińska of Poland.

Her run was good enough for ninth overall, an impressive performance from a teenager running at her debut senior World Championships. It was her second fastest 400m of the season, just 0.11 behind her national record of 50.70 which she ran in May.

The race was Adeleke's third run of the championships. She had previously competed in the mixed 4x400m heat and the individual 400m heat. She is also part of Irish 4x100m squad for the championships.

90 minutes before Adeleke's race, Irish Olympian Mark English secured automatic qualification for the semi-finals of the 800m.

The Donegal man finished third in his heat, clocking a season's best of 1:44.76, a time just 0.05 off his national record. The 800m semi-finals take place at 3am Irish time on Friday, July 22nd.
