The Olympic torch has gone where no Olympic torch has gone before as it was carried aboard the International Space Station today.

The torch, which will be used to ignite the Olympic flame for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, was sent in a spacecraft that brought three new crew members to the ISS.

Although the torch has been to space twice before - in 1996 and 2000 - it has never before left a spacecraft. It will be carried on it's first spacewalk on Saturday before being returned to Earth.

Sadly, the torch was not lit and will not be lit because that would consume oxygen and pose a safety hazard. So to see how fire behaves in space, you'll have to go see Gravity.
