South African Luvo Manyonga broke the Diamond League record with a massive jump of 8.61m in Shanghai on Saturday.

The Olympic silver medalist had already set two marks, 8.48m and 8.49m, which would have been good enough to win the competition before his monster leap in the final round.

After the event, Manyonga told Athletics Weekly that he had been hoping to go even further. However, the track proved to be a problem.

The track was really fast and that made it difficult. I did a few fouls and that was a distraction. I didn’t get the distance today I wanted as I was looking for 8.80m, but I know it will come.

The jump was just 4cm off Manyonga's personal best set just last month.
