It was a mixed day for Pittsburgh sports fan yesterday, with the Steelers coming so close to reaching the AFC Championship game in NFL, their hockey team - the Penguins had a much better day of it.

But amidst their much needed 5-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, was a strange occurence when a referee savagely took out a Penguins player and left him unable to continue the game. It came in the third period, with the game long over as a contest - and the Hurricanes were threatening with the puck.

Penguins defenseman David Warsofsky was skating backwards to cover the oncoming attack, when he tripped over the referee Tim Peel:

Clearly it was unintentional, and Peel had slipped. But it's unfortunate that the ice had him sliding into the path of the back-pedalling Warsofsky. Warsofsky landed heavily on the ice, and was unable to return, prompting the Penguins to call up another defensemen in his place for tonight's game against St. Louis Blues.

Hopefully the Penguins will make it two wins in a row, and begin to cheer up the disappointed Pittsburgh fans.
