WWE Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper has passed away at the age of 61, after suffering a cardiac arrest while sleeping.
Piper was one of the most entertaining wrestlers in the late 80s and early 90s, famed for his quick wit and brilliant ability on the microphone. Although Canadian, Piper's character was Scottish and of course his kilt became a synonymous part of his persona.
Last night the WWE gave him a 10 bell salute at the beginning of their live event, while Vince McMahon released a statement saying:
Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE, beloved by millions of fans around the world. I extend my deepest condolences to his family.
Elsewhere, WWE stars past and present have been paying tribute online as well:
I'm absolutely devastated. My heart goes out to Roddy's family. RIP my friend. One of the best in every way! pic.twitter.com/hLakBF8sdC
