There are plenty of causes out there worth backing and those which call for us to give money to or support those in less fortunate situations to us; the Safe Ireland campaign is different, in that it speaks to every one of us – individually – not looking for financial support but a change in a state of mind.

Safe Ireland's Man Up campaign is encouraging us all to take five steps to changing attitudes, challenging the things as they are and making Ireland a safer place for women and children.

The most telling and important advice from Safe Ireland is to 'Step Up.'

Step up and be part of a culture shift that respects women and children as equal.  This starts with the little things.  Maybe voice your disapproval the next time someone tells a joke that belittles or exploits women.  And challenge the argument that sexual and domestic abuse is out of character, a once-off thing or just happens with a few drinks.  Because, we know, if it happens once, it will happen again.

This goes to the very heart of the issue here in Ireland, what goes unsaid.  There is a huge amount  to be said about the power of speaking up and how far a few words can go to helping change the collective mindset.

The campaign focuses on the Powerful and Simple Things Men Can Do:

Free ourselves - Challenge the traditional images of manhood.

Speak out - When we speak against domestic abuse we are powerful.

Get Help - If you suspect abuse or an assault, take action in a way that is safe for you and the person you want to help.

Listen & Learn -  Learning about the violence and manipulation experienced by women will help you recognize it if it occurs to someone close to you, or to yourself.

The Man Up campaign can only be effective when it's listened to, understood and addressed. Each of us has a responsibility and a key role to play. It's not a few euro a month, it's a lot more.
