Nearly 650,000 people had their personal data stolen in a huge security breach on Paddy Power's website in 2010, with 120,000 of these based in Ireland.

The bookmaker confirmed that personal details of customers – such as names, usernames, dates of births and mothers' maiden names –  were comprised but that financial details or passwords were not affected.

The breach impacted customers who signed either during or before 2010, however Paddy Power has said that they launched a full investigation and did not find any suspicious activity on the customers' accounts.

A third party is supposed to have approached Paddy Power saying they had become aware that the personal information of some of its customers had fallen into the hands of a person in Canada. A later legal action to retrieve the information revealed the extent of the breach and the bookmaker confirmed that it will now contact all 649,055 affected customers.
