Uruguay ran out easy winners over hosts South Africa tonight, but didn’t escape unscathed. Forward Luis Suarez took a heavy blow to the mouth from Aaron Mokoena early in the second half. Suarez was left bleeding, and seems to have lost a tooth, although we were shortchanged on closeups of his gums, so it’s hard to be sure. Mokoena escaped punishment besides a free kick, which doesn’t seem quite fair, considering a much more incidental contact with Khune resulted in a red card and a penalty.

In any event, Suarez played on and played very well, earning that penalty and setting up the final goal from Pereira. The first goal from Forlan was lucky and brilliant: See it here.

Here’s the video of Suarez’ slap in the face. Notice just how unapologetic Mokoena is. It wasn’t the first time he fouled Suarez, and it wouldn’t be the last.

The red card for Khuné had nothing to do with the strength of the impact. From the official rules, if you are the last defender between the attacking player and the goal line and you commit a foul on the attacker to prevent him from scoring, you immediately earn a red card even if the foul is minimal….
