On the heels of the official confirmation that Irish MMA star Conor McGregor will fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 178, both fighters have taken the opportunity to talk a bit of smack ahead of what will no doubt be a cracking fight on September 27 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Both fighters are coming off the back of a three fight win streak, and while Poirier is the more experienced fighter, Conor McGregor is turning heads with his early UFC performances. Poirier will no doubt be McGregor's toughest test in the octagon so far, but he is in typically confident mood, commenting on the fight announcement he said:

It’s a dream for any athlete to fight in Las Vegas, and when Lorenzo (Fertitta) and Dana (White) told me they were bringing me to Vegas post-UFC Dublin, that adrenalin went up again. It was down from the fight, and then it came right back up again. So I barely had time to let that last one settle and I really don’t want to let it settle. I just want to keep that momentum going, get back in the gym, keep preparing, and carry on. Ultimately I want everyone in this division. I want this to be a one-man division, and Dustin Poirier is next in line.

The response from Poirier suggests he won't be backing down from the verbal warfare and is looking forward to the fight:

I’m excited, I’ve been asking for tough fights, and this one’s gonna be a good fight. It’s even more fun because the guy thinks he’s a God.
There’s only one thing that’s gonna happen, and that’s gonna be Conor McGregor getting whipped. That’s the only thing. This is what I want. It brings some light down to the division. People want to see the ‘45ers and they’ll be talking about us now and my name will be up there in the conversation. This is the next step, to be a Pay-Per-View draw and a household name. This is part of my journey.

They can't both be right, and we can't wait for UFC 178 to see who backs up their talk by taking the win. Expect to hear more from both parties in the coming weeks.
