Ice hockey probably wouldn't be the first thing one would associate with San Jose, California. For me, the Earthquakes, the song (admittedly about somebody signing from outside the city as the title implies), and the fact that the city is twinned with Dublin would probably spring to mind.
Anyway, the Sharks are the local hockey franchise and they certainly seem like a truly decent bunch. 18-year-old fan Sam Tageson was born with a serious heart condition, and the team gave him the opportunity to become an officially signed-up player on a one-day contract. He practiced with the team before the game, met the general manager and skated out with the team before the face-off.
See if you can keep it together when he reacts to the fans' ovation. I dare you.
