Phil Mickelson has been harshly critically of Tom Watson's abilities as a team captain throughout the Ryder Cup. Today, Watson explained the clash of personalities in an interview on Sky Sports... sort of. The 65-year-old was extremely vague about what caused the rift between himself and Mickelson.

The issue between Phil and myself, it's basically a difference of opinion. He has a difference of opinion on the way he would like to manage the team and I certainly had my own opinion on how I'd manage the team. So, that's the controversy and that's the issue.

After revealing absolutely no startling information on the matter, Watson went on to declare his pride for the US team. The Americans lost their third successive Ryder Cup to Europe but Watson confessed that the European side were just too strong.

But I have to say, I'm very proud of my team's efforts. The one thing I asked them to do, right from the beginning is give it absolutely everything they have and they did. They just ran up against a buzz-saw.

The European team is very, very strong. When you have four of the top five players in the world and you play against them, you better be firing all cylinders. Frankly, we weren't.
