A new TV series detailing the history and development of Irish golf begins is set to hit the small screen this week, in the build up to the Ryder Cup.
From Tee To Green: The Story Of Irish Golf tells the story of how the game reached Ireland and expanded into one of the nation's biggest sports, with Irish golfers winning more major championships in the last seven years than any other country, bar USA. The three-part series features first hand accounts of Ryder Cup wins from the likes of Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell and also contains never before seen archive footage of the earliest Irish golf events from as far back as the 1890s.
The series will feature exclusive footage of Ireland and Britain's first Walker Cup win over USA in 1938. It took the Great Britain and Ireland team seven years to get one over the Americans for the first time in the amateur tournament.
Irishman Cecil Ewing defeated the American R.E. Billows to clinch the tournament with just three singles matches remaining. Ewing won the final hole to give his side a 7 ½ to 4 ½ win. Now, 76 years later, Ewing's win on the 18th at St Andrews will be screened on television for the first time.
Episode one of From Tee To Green airs on Setanta Ireland on Tuesday Sept 23rd at 9pm.
