When news broke of Lee Keegan winning his appeal against his red card received during Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final, the main thing many people wanted to know was what was the reasoning behind the punishment being rescinded.
Sean Moran in the Irish Times today has answered that question. Keegan got off on a technicality.
In his report following the game, referee David Coldrick wrote that Keegan was sent off for "kicking with minimal force". Through video evidence Mayo showed that Keegan had not made contact with Johnny Buckley. If instead he had been reported for attempting to kick the Kerry man then it is unlikely that his appeal would have been successful.
With Mayo's opposition to the game being played in Limerick and now the decision to overturn the red card, it should make for a compelling encounter tomorrow.
