GAA nicknames, they're not just slight derivatives of a player's surname, like you'll often see in rugby and football. They're a bit more inventive than that. But still across the country, from Buncrana to Ballygunner, you'll find the same ones persist.

This is our team of some of the most generic nicknames that you'll find in GAA.

Roundy

Position: Goalkeeper

Reason for nickname: Carrying a few extra pounds in his very large arse. Surprisingly agile for a man his size.

Colm

Position: Corner back

Reason for nickname: Not a nickname. Every club has someone named Colm at corner back.

Rock

Position: Full back

Reason for nickname: An impenetrable force defensively. Also, doesn't talk much.

Position: Corner back

Reason for nickname: Small lad. Works on a building site. Eats copious amounts of breakfast rolls and always asks for extra sausages.

Position: Wing back

Reason for nickname: Skinny but tenacious. Student who comes home to work in a local bar at the weekend.

Brick

Position: Centre back

Reason for nickname: Foundation of the team. Leader of men. Also, possibly a brick-layer.

Reason for nickname: Extremely mobile. Liable to pop up anywhere on the pitch. Probably blonde.

Reason for nickname: 6' 5" tall.

Position: Wing forward

Reason for nickname: Well built. Tough to push off the ball. Named on the forty but often deployed as a third midfielder. Plasterer

Position: Centre forward

Reason for nickname: Most skillful player on the team. Flashy. Likes to wear boots of a distinctive colour, usually white.

Reason for nickname: Wins large quantities of dirty ball. Super determined. Liable to get sent off.

Rasher

Position: Corner forward

Reason for nickname: Not a connoisseur of the finer things in life. Named due to consuming rasher sandwiches for breakfeast, brunch, lunch, dinner, supper and any late night meals.

Bomber

Position: Full forward

Reason for nickname: Big target man. Possibly has a beard.

Position: Corner forward

Reason for nickname: Small and quick. A menace to larger less mobile defenders. Moves like a 10-year-old on a moped.
