The chairman of the National Referee's Committee Pat McEnaney thinks that using two referees should be tried in hurling. Speaking at the launch of the nicely titled 'Think You Can Do Better?' initiative, which aims to get four inter-county players to train as referees in their respective counties, McEnaney said he would like to see the two referee idea explored.
Will we have two hurling referees in 10 years’ time? There will definitely come changes. I’d like it tried. It’s definitely one thing that I’d like to have a look at, maybe for some League campaign.
Let’s have a look at two referees. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. But try it.
McEnaney has raised the blood pressure of manliness mongering hurling analysts in the past, many of whom speak of Monaghan as if it were a foreign country.
We suspect the two referee concept will not find favour among that constituency, most of whom seem to regard having even one referee there as an unreasonable concession.
He also said he didn't see professional referees being the answer but said it was hard to predict where we'd be in thirty years time.
