The Mayo County board have confirmed that James Horan has stepped down as manager in the wake of the All Ireland semi final replay against Kerry.

Speaking to journalists in the aftermath of the 3-16 to 3-13 extra time defeat, Horan was non-committal when asked whether his four years in charge were coming to an end.

However, it seems that he has quickly made up his mind and leaves the job after four particularly noteworthy years in charge.

Horan took charge of Mayo in 2010, with the county at a particularly low ebb having been knocked out of the Championship by Longford in first round of the qualifiers. Since then, Horan has led the county to two All-Ireland finals and two semi-finals. Given that record, Horan will surely bow out with his head held high despite not having claimed that much coveted All Ireland title.
