There was quite a bit of interest this week with the news that Paul Galvin had rejoined the Kerry panel. The four time All Ireland winner won't be in the squad for the Allianz League clash with Cork on Sunday but you have to assume that he wouldn't have come back unless there was a genuine chance of playing time. And that's something that Pat Spillane just can't get behind.
As quoted in the Independent, the Kerry legend and RTÉ pundit, has shared his doubts about the decision by all involved to add Galvin to a squad that was already looking very strong ahead of their Championship defence.
The bottom line is I think, personally speaking, that it's a major mistake.
Calling it a 'distraction', Spillane questioned whether Galvin, at 35, had anything left to give. He also suggested that Galvin's family ties to Eamonn Fitzmaurice were less than helpful in the situation.
I think it's going to be a distraction. I think it'll put awful pressure on his brother-in-law, who's the manager, Eamonn Fitzmaurice.
Spillane referred to Mick O'Dwyer convincing a large number of his vintage Kerry team to push things out for another year in 1989. That didn't end well for Kerry and although Spillane has wished Galvin the best, he's far from optimistic.
He was a brilliant servant to Kerry. He was a warrior. I hope it works out but I have a bad feeling.
