GAA has given us some great nicknames down the years - PJ 'Fingers' O'Connell, Sambo McNaughton and Shane 'Cake' Curran just to name a few. One of the most prominent monikers in GAA at the moment is that of Tipperary star John O'Dwyer - the nickname is 'Bubbles'.
The story of how the Killenaule clubman got the name has been revealed on Independent.ie today by the Off the Ball boys (a great bunch of lads.) A caller to the show recently told a story of a meeting with John's father. Over a pint, the etymology of the nickname was revealed.
As a child, John was quite a hairy baby and so people began to call him Bubbles, as in Michael Jackson's chimp.
The man himself confirmed the story on Twitter.
Yes I can confirm that the piece in @IndoSport today is actually true.. My mother started it and it stuck #thanksmam #jacko #embarressed
