Rugby has become massively popular in Ireland in the new millennium, a development which may or may not be unconnected to the Irish national team's mysterious transformation from being a shit team into a good one in that time.

But there remain a few tenacious dissenters. Larry Ryan in the Examiner for instance has fought a spirited battle against what he and other rugby sceptics term 'the egg'.

Then there are the few Republican inclined GAA people who wretch violently whenever Ireland's Call comes on, the diehard Manchester United and Liverpool fans who don't understand the rules and have no interest in pretending they know them and there are the League of Ireland fans who disdain the in-your-face fashionableness of the rugby scene.

The League of Ireland remains possibly the largest hotbed for anti-rugby sentiment. Brian Kerr was asked about rugby on Radio One before and made a couple of remarks that suggested he wasn't filing into the RDS every other week.

And he was even more explicit in commentary on Dundalk-Sligo Rovers tonight.
