The Noble for Ireland controversy appears to be over. The 27 year old West Ham midfielder still believes there is time for him to break into the England squad - an honour he says would be 'the pinnacle of my career.'

Noble, whose response to the notion he could line out for Ireland was ambivalent at best, has his heart set on an England call-up.

Rumours of his possible inclusion in the Ireland squad created ferocious debate within Irish football circles over the summer and autumn months.

Liam George described attempts to draft in Noble as 'a disgrace', while John Giles said he had no problem with it, insisting that he was a good player and that Ireland had brought in many English-born players in the past who probably longed to play for England before accepting the Irish call-up.

Niall Quinn, meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview, tried to draw a distinction between English players who were passionate about playing for Ireland and those who had little interest.
