Friends of Giovanni Trapattoni believed he was going to be sacked.
Speaking to Pat Kenny this morning, RTE’s man in Rome Paddy Agnew who had been in contact with people close to Trapattoni said that they believed he was close to being relieved of his duties by the FAI.
The reaction (within the Trapattoni camp) was a certain amount of surprise because, speaking to the camp (Wednesday) afternoon, they were convinced it was only a matter of time before he was sacked
Once his press conference in Dublin following the Faroe Islands game was cancelled they believed his sacking was inevitable.
The business of him not doing his post-match briefing in Dublin and being told to just go back to Milan was, for them, indication that the writing was on the wall, so they were surprised when I contacted them and said the FAI had confirmed Trapattoni (was to remain in charge).
Most interestingly, when Pat Kenny asked Paddy Agnew if Trapattoni was asked to attended English Premier League and League of Ireland games every weekend, would he be able to fulfil those conditions, Paddy Agnew responded with certainty that he would not.
But if those sort of terms were outlined or suggested to Trapattoni he would absolutely walk away.
Could it be that the FAI will make these requests to Trapattoni in the hope that he will walk away from the job without them having to pay off the remainder of his contract?
