Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has described Wayne Rooney's form as 'awful' and says he should be dropped once Robin Van Persie returns and once Falcao settles in at Old Trafford.

In his Yahoo Sport Blog today, Parker wrote

As for Wayne Rooney, he's been awful. There he was at Burnley this weekend, supposedly captaining the team - but I saw a player interested only in himself, doing nothing to try and lift his game or inspire his team-mates. The only thing in any way remarkable about his performance is that he collects £300,000 a week to play that badly

It is not the first time Parker has had a cut at Rooney. He attacked Van Gaal for his decision to make Rooney captain, describing the striker as 'the archetype of a player who believes leadership is about shouting and screaming.'

Parker, an integral part of United league winning sides in 1993 and 1994, is also the author of the best named football autobiographies ever published, 'Paul Parker tackles like a ferret', during which he recounted marvellous stories such as the one about Roy Keane getting into a fight with a German in a hedge back in 1993. Without that book, this tale may never have seen the light of day. Read about it here.
