According to both Mark Ogden of the Telegraph and Daniel Taylor in the Guardian, Alex Ferguson will have an important role in picking David Moyes' successor at Old Trafford and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is the board's favoured candidate to take over.

It had been suggested that Ferguson, who summoned to David Moyes to his mansion last May to inform him that he was the next manager of Manchester United despite the misgivings of some such as David Gill, would have less of a role in picking the United manager this time around.

The three frontrunners to replace Moyes are Ancelotti, Athletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal. According to Taylor, Laurent Blanc has been ruled out.

There is some support within the dressing room for Ryan Giggs to take over on a permanent basis but the board will not take into account the player's views when making the appointment.
