Arsene Wenger Has Spoken Out On Perhaps The Most Boring Topic Imaginable

Arsène Wenger has called for regulation grass length across Premier League pitches, which he believes will preserve the quality of football in the English game.

He criticised the practice of some clubs who allow their grass to grow longer than usual to stifle 'passing' teams. It's a reasonable viewpoint to take, but surely clubs are entitled to make subtle adjustments to their own pitches - length, width, grass growth provided the pitch doesn't resemble Lansdowne Road circa 1983 - to gain an advantage, as long as they operate within the Laws of the Game? Surely no top-level football match is allowed to proceed on grass that isn't as well tended as a decent golf fairway, with minor variations just another difficulty to overcome while on the road.

Wenger framed his complaint as a protection of fans who pay good money to watch good football, but at least his idea of what constitutes overlong grass isn't as outrageous as Don Hutchison's a few weeks back. Said Wenger:

It can look a ridiculous subject but it is a very important one because the speed of the game is linked with the length of the grass,

People pay money to watch good football and behind that is always the respect for people who pay and buy their tickets. We are all there for that.

I know perfectly and you know perfectly as well that some managers give orders to their groundsman sometimes to not cut the grass because they play against a team who passes the ball well.

We have to be above that and it's quite sad that we have to regulate it. I think we all have to serve people who come and watch good football.
