The League of Ireland has been pulling together this week to help one of their own in his time of need. Former Derry City striker Mark Farren has been battling a brain tumour for six years now and needs treatment in Germany costing €30,000. His family launched an appeal for donations last Friday and in that time over €25,000 has been raised.

Yesterday Seamus Coleman and James McClean did their part in helping Farren get to where he needs and today Ireland goalkeeper David Forde has also made a donation of £1,000. Forde played with Farren at the Brandywell between 2005 and 2006.

Collections took place at League of Ireland grounds up and down the country this weekend and if you would like to make a donation you can do so at this GoGetFunding page.

Here's why the campaign is so important.

After six years of fighting against a life threatening condition, Derry city FC Legend Mark Farren needs our help. Marks 3rd surgery took place a month ago and surgeons removed 80-90% of a tumour. The invasive nature of the procedure has had a stunning effect on his speech and mobility.

The Biopsy which followed has indicated that the tumour is a grade 4, meaning its highly aggressive. Being no stranger to thinking outside the box, Mark is seeking medical assistance from an elite cancer centre in Germany. The 6 week treatment programme is his best chance of saving or at least prolonging his life. This is the one goal with which Mark needs our help. Any contribution is greatly appreciated.
