West Ham striker Andy Carroll returned to his old club Liverpool today and, in the lead up to the game, the Hammers front man used the opportunity to air his grievances over how he was treated by Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

Rodgers messed with Carroll's head according to the target man and constantly sent him mixed messages about his future:

"With Brendan Rodgers there was a lot going on, with what he was saying to me and what was actually happening, he'd say 'you're going to play every week, you're going to play every game with Luis Suarez up front.

From the second Rodgers took over at Liverpool, Carroll's days appeared to be numbered as his hulking, cross needy presence was the very opposite of Rodgers' whirlwind possession game. But it appears Rodgers had some difficulty saying this straight out:

"He was telling me one thing to my face and then I'd leave the training ground and he'd ring me and tell me a completely different thing.

"He was messing with my head. I thought 'I just want to play football, I do not need this'. I was very frustrated. I lost respect for him to be honest and I knew it was time to go."
