Former Burnley defender and PFA chairman Clarke Carlisle is 'fighting for his life' in Leeds General Infirmary after being struck by a lorry on the A64 in north Yorkshire. The Daily Mail are reporting that the incident occurred at 7.30 on Monday morning near the village of Bishopthorpe.
At this moment in time, the sequence of events which led to the incident are unclear with a police spokesperson saying they are currently 'pursuing all avenues'. The Mail are reporting that the stretch of road in question was closed and Carlisle was airlifted to hospital via air ambulance.
Carlisle retired in 2013 having last played for Northampton. He went on to become a pundit and highly regarded football personality having been elected chairman of the PFA, as well as working with groups such us Kick It Out. He is widely recognised as being one of the UK's most intelligent footballers, having even competed on Countdown to some distinction.
