Irish Jockey And Ex-Footballer Banned For Corruption

Leading Irish flat jockey Eddie Ahern has been banned for ten years for 10 years by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) for a number of breaches of their anti-corruption rules. Ahern was found to have deliberately prevented the horse Judgethemoment from running on its merits in a two-mile handicap at Lingfield on 21 January 2011. Ahern set a furious pace on Judgethemoment, “what one would expect in a six- or seven-furlong race” in the eyes of the panel, and then dropped back through the field from halfway. Former West Brom footballer and racehorse owner Neil Clement was also banned from for 15 years and three moths from horse racing for acting on information from Ahern to lay bets against his horses on the Betfair betting exchange. Toulon enjoyed victory over Clermont in the Heineken Cup final at the Aviva on Saturday and it turns out they’ve also enjoyed the UCD facilities this week as they prepared for Friday’s Top 14 semi-final against Toulouse. From The Irish Independent: After training, Wilkinson stayed back and used the peaceful surrounds of the UCD back pitch to hone his kicking as the newly crowned European champions remained in Dublin for the first half of the week after their epic victory over Clermont on Saturday, using UCD’s 50m pool for recovery and training on campus. UCD director of rugby Bobby Byrne presented Wilkinson with a College jersey before departure as he headed off in search of a European and domestic double. Joe Brolly has stood by the criticism which he made of Armagh and their manager on the Sunday Game Live after their loss to Cavan. Armagh manager, Paul Grimley said yesterday that he was giving serious consideration to boycotting the national broadcaster following Brolly’s comments. Following yesterday’s news that Richard Dunne is likely to leave Aston Villa, we’ve come up with five possible landing sports for the Irish centre back. 1. Spartak Moscow Spartak are surely keen to add to their Irish contingent after Aiden McGeady has been such a roaring sucess and what better way to do that than to sign the player who produced one of the most heroic defensive performances their home ground has ever seen. 2. LA Galaxy After blocking Robbie Keane from joining up with the Ireland squad for the England and Georgia games, Galaxy top brass are surely desperate to find a way to placate their talisman. An obvious solution would be to reunite Keane with his boyhood club friend and Ireland teammate. By now you will probably have heard of the massive tornado that devastaed Oklahoma. Many people lost their lives or had their homes destroyed but athletes in the area are trying to help. Before last weekend’s Heineken Cup final many pundits were touting Clermont as potentially the best team to ever win the tournament. After all, no team had won all their games since the tournament switched to the 24 team format and few sides swept though their campaign playing such breathtaking rugby. But Clermont bottled it on the day, leaving the question of who is the best side to win the cup up for debate. We sifted through the last 18 seasons of European rugby to bring you an unscientific power ranking of the ten best winners. 10. Toulon 2013 Did they deserve to win the final? Absolutely not. Does this mean they aren’t a great side? Also, absolutely not. They arguably have the strongest panel to ever win the tournament and most of their players would walk into any club side in the world. They deserve credit for upsetting Clermont but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, they were only 3 point underdogs so it’s not really David slaying Goliath. More like Goliath being slayed by a slightly smaller ogre/giant. But they make the list because they can play to a variety of styles (although they generally play the one that starts at number 1 and ends at number 10). In the pool stages they put points on teams with ease and when the games got tighter in the knockout stages they used Wilkinson and their pack to grind out wins. The fact that this quality was missing from Clermont’s game probably justifies their place on the list. Although this guy almost made me rethink it.
